Morley Elderly Action is a registered charity that helps and supports people over the age of 60 to remain living independently within their own home environment. The area we serve is Greater Morley, which includes the town of Morley and the six other satellite villages of Churwell, Drighlington, Gildersome, East Ardsley, West Ardsley, and Tingley. The area covers 2.5 Council Wards, and there are over 10,000 older people residing within these boundaries (Census, 2001).

We provide a diverse range of quality services, which are determined by our service users and we run projects in order to combat social isolation. Some of these include:

• Gardening
• Welfare Benefit information
• Help accessing relevant benefits or services.
Liasion with the Police
• Advocacy to help older people execute and maintain their rights

We also provide services such as the provision of home security items i.e. door locks, door chains, door scopes and security lighting, and in conjunction with the Fire Service, we provide smoke alarms.

Our growing team of volunteers (presently approx 100), many of who are of retirement age themselves, carry out:

• Befriending visits,
• Deliver meals on wheels,
• Provide administration support for ourselves and for other elderly groups,
• Provide Morley Wheels, a voluntary community transport scheme.

We act in support of the following groups:

• Strollers and the Scramblers Walking groups
• Arts group
• Craft group
• The Musers (men’s group)
• Three Lunch Clubs; The Smile, The Grove and a third one in conjunction with Morley High School.

We carry out home visits to assess the needs of our users and their carers, and access services on their behalf. On Mondays to Fridays, for four hours per day, we hold drop in sessions when older people can call in for support and advice. We currently have over 1600 members, and more than 2500 service users in our database, with this number growing on a daily basis.

With three full time members of staff, and despite our volunteers contributing over 11,000 hours of service delivery input in 2006, we still unfortunately have waiting lists for many of our services.

A small charge is levied for some of our services including Morley Wheels, and the various lunch clubs. Our gardening service is provided at a heavily subsidised charge and like much of what we provide is over subscribed whilst being massively under funded to meet the genuine and ever growing need for the provision of help and care in the community.
